A cemetery in the middle of hundreds of acres of strip mines in Paradise, KY
This photo is the beginning of TVA's new natural gas power plant, exactly where Paradise once stood. The town of Paradise started in the early 1800's. In 1952, P&M Coal began strip mining in the area. 7 years later in 1959, TVA announced the construction of a power plant in Paradise. TVA builds the largest coal-fired plant and Peabody builds the world's largest shovel named "Big Hog". In 1962, Peabody and TVA began a 25 year contract. By 1967, the last of the residents leave paradise as the air was filled with sand-like fallout and pollution from the plant and the noise was intense from the coal minig operations. TVA leveled the town.
